Every now and again, a new musical star shoots into the sky and captures the attention of anyone lucky enough to see it. One talent who has shone brightly in 2009 is Pakistani singing sensation Omer Nadeem. Already being compared to Atif Aslam, the gravelly voiced newcomer hit top gear on British-Asian music producer Khiza’s brand new album Turning Point.
In his first major interview in the UK, Omer spoke to Eastern Eye about working with Khiza, the monster song Aey Khuda and why he is no rock’n’ roll rebel.
FULL INTERVIEW :
Who first discovered you could sing?
I have been singing for as long as I can remember. It has been a passion for me ever since I can remember. Though my family noticed my talent, the discovery was made by me, as I knew how comfortable I was singing. At the age of 13, I really got into it and started learning how to play the guitar.
Who were your biggest musical influences when you were growing up?
I have never been influenced by any particular artist or person. It is the surroundings and nature that have their effect on me and it is these influences that are converted into songs. I believe it’s my imagination that is present in my songs. For me, it is the representation of every emotion, feeling and expression. I merely translate these things around me into a composition.
How did you hook up with Khiza?
Through my friend Talha in Karachi. Khiza listened to Dil Ka Diya over the internet, which he liked very much and decided to work with me.
What was it like working with him?
It has been a really great experience. There has always been a good understanding between us. The best thing about Khiza is that he is very friendly, a fun-loving guy and is just like my elder brother who is always there for me. I have worked with a lot of people in this profession, but I can easily say that Khiza has been the most cooperative of them all.
When you were singing Aey Khuda, could you sense it was going to be a big song?
No. I really liked the lyrics, but I thought the song was just okay. But after I recorded my vocals and Khiza engineered the song and sent me the full version, I got the feeling that it was going to be big because it sounded really good. You can’t tell much while you’re recording a song because it is just building up at that point. But even after you have finished, it’s really difficult topredict how the audience is going to react. I have seen some really great talents in Pakistan with brilliant songs and compositions go totally unnoticed.
What it is like for you to be featured on the album Turning Point, which has so many other great singers?
This is something I never thought would happen. It’s an honour to be featured with big names like Abrar-ul-Haq and Hadiqa Kiani. In this industry there is like a whole hierarchy system when it comes to getting popularity among the masses, and a breakthrough is really really hard to come by. But this is a wonderful start for me, Mashallah, and all the credit goes to Khiza.
What else are you working on?
I’m working on my album and a couple of projects for Bollywood. I also have a song that will be featured in a drama soon. There are a couple of offers regarding tours to the UK on the table as well. Inshallah, more of my work will start coming soon for all of you to see.
What are your greatest ambitions?
Every musician wants to reach the top of the music industry. I am willing to work as hard as my passion allows me to have my message reach the masses through my music. I strongly believe in fate. I wish to give 100 per cent and the rest is in the hands of almighty Allah. All I can do is pray and I would like to request all my well-wishers to remember me in their prayers as well.
What is the scene like for new singers like you in Pakistan?
The scene is currently in decline because there are no investors, no good promotors in Pakistan. The situation in the country is bad as well because of terrorism. There is not too much room for promotion for music in Pakistan when the situation seems so grim. All the new artists can do is invest in their music and albums on their own, which is nearly impossible for young artists like me. That is why I am thankful to Khiza to be featured in his album because he appreciated my music and believed in my talent.
Why do you think so many great singers come from Pakistan?
I think this is a blessing. I have observed in the past that there have been many gifted singers around who have not had any training and today they are more successful. I think the reason for this is that they are not bound by the technical terms of music, they compose using their instincts, experiment freely and end up making music because of their raw natural talent and skills. This is what clicks with the audience. There has also been this great tradition of music in the subcontinent, and generation after generation, there have been some really great performers. I really do hope that we continue to produce more great performers for the country.
Do you have any plans to go over to India?
Yes, why not? It’s always a good opportunity to go to India. Since there has always been tension and the ties between us have been fragile, going over and performing there gives us a sense of unity and increases hope for peace, no matter what the magnitude. I would always contribute to acts of this nature and if I get more offers from Bollywood after the ones I am doing, I would certainly take them.
Which is your favourite song of all time?
I never stick to one song, there are many. But I really enjoy listening to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, AR Rahman and Kishore Kumar. They really have set a benchmark for all musicians across the world.
Which do you think has been your most memorable live performance?
It was back in 2004 when I used to perform with Atif Aslam. The show was held in Alhamra, Lahore. The crowd was going totally crazy. We thought we were somewhere out of this world. The audience was all around us and giving
us a great response.
But if I talk about my solo performance, then it has to be in Kinnaird College, Lahore. I was up there on the stage with just one guitar and no other musicians. (Smiles) But when I started to sing, I was amazed to see the response from the crowd.
Why would you tell people to pick up Khiza’s album Turning Point?
You will find every kind of music on the 20-track album. The variation is amazing. It covers every music market and the best part is that Khiza sang a song himself in this album. I think the versatility of the album will be really attractive and all sorts of listeners would tune in.
Finally, are you a rock ’n’ roll rebel or a good boy next door?
My music has always reflected my personality, that is why it fits in the genre of soft rock. I am not seen as a rebel in any way – people see me as someone with a sweet personality and a good heart. (Laughs) Which is why I would say I am simply the good boy next door.

Hey Musti Bhaai, it’s nice chatting with you after long span of 3.5 years. This is my first time too that I am writing on any forum for my self. I believe there are some misunderstandings or you forget past time when we worked together that you are blaming such riotous things to me. Now let’s keep the truth out to the world.
I’m in music far before than you, you must have remember the time when Xulfi Bhai asked you for the songs (for album recording) and you had nothing in your hand except few lines of “Yaadein”!!!!! Then how you plead me for making songs for your album ……. Just forget it I made songs for Roxen and never claimed for that. I was 15 yrs old when I started working for you and was kid in front of you at that time that’s why you made me fool, ooopppppsss sorry……… I still respect you as my elder brother and always have good intentions for you and your band.
Now in reply of your points
1) Musti Bhai you know music is my passion and I m in music since I was just 12. I have not even helped you in your songs rather composed 5 songs of your album. I never wanted to mention but I guess you want me to disclose now. Songs were, if you forget a)Sapnay b)Chalte Rahey c)Aaj d)To phir aao e) Jag chor diya.
2) Please Musti Bhai why should I come to you people and asked about my own composition. First, I have never appeared in your jam sessions. Secondly, how come a professional band still don’t know not to play sessions in front of another composer please Musti bhai jane dein !!!!!
Thanks for wishing me good luck, let me clear you one thing MashAllah I am an ACCA student and my social circle belongs to respectable and educated friends who respect elders……hmmmm you might are receiving abusive mails from your upset fans who do not believe that Roxen can STEAL any artist’s song.
Getting attention was never my motive and the way u mentioned ahan I could have got it this way when you have launched your first album.
As you know that music is my hobby and I just got my song recorded for my friends which I have composed back in 2003. Hey for your information I have performed this song at SKANS Annual function on 26 March 2008 while as you said your show went on air in April 2008, which i have never watched.
But after hearing your teaser I really got disappointed that Roxen the big band have stolen my song. Just think how much your fan following got disappointed.
Hey talking about Hudh you said you can come up and claim it since Haider is in your band please mere bhai go for it, Since you are a Top band in Pakistan these days you can claim any Artist’s song like mine………but from inside, you know all the reality and believe me you can never hide the truth….. However in your post I got to know one new thing that Haider’s mom can also compose the songs which I never got to know in 7-8 years I have spent with Haider.
As you said your respect is prior than fame so as a member of a Top band this doesn’t suits you to steal any other band/artist song even if other band broke up and other band member is now part of your band. People wants to listen Roxen , Roxen’s compositions not any other band’s/artist’s compositions.

Heya all,This is prolly the first time in last 3 years of me writing on our forums ive no clue who am i gona adress to and what am i writing.I m sad and the reason is obvious.I have nothing more to say then few things
1) omar you have helped us in composition of only yaadein(guitar solo) and chaltay rahay(one line) but because you were part of us then therefore i appreciated every effort of yours and thankd you like a brother
in our album.i still dont regret it.Thanks for always helping Us.
2) You can keep dil ka diya with you and i assure you that my song will not be even close to the track you have made.(now i have realized why you came to our jam a month back)
I wish you best of luck with your future despite the fact that i recieve hatred emails from ur friends everyday and even abusive emails of which i can react strongly then anybody else but No it doesnt suit me.
If you wanted this song you could ve come up to us and ask us once that you want this song for ur album and i swear i would have never said no to you but what you have done right at the time of our album release is sad.We all love attention i am sure you are loving it too these days but for me fame and gettin attention is not much than my respect and you will realise this couple of months from now what damage you are doing to yourself.
I dont know how my band would react to this post as i have not taken anyone in confidence but yes i dont regret a single second of working with you and still consider you a part of Roxen family because i am a man of my words.
Deep inside you know too that even hudh wasnt your composition and it has more input from haider and his mother.Will you be able to coop up with it if i tomorrow go out and release it saying haider has given it to Roxen
because he is part of the band now ? I even know where you have recorded your track after you heard it on our jam and the weeks you took to record this song after i sang it on tv show i was even aware of it.But like i said i
dont have a habbit of going out to the world crying infront of them asking them to help me.I have my music to help me through my fans and it will the day my fans are going to hear Bujh Hai Gaya from Roxen.
For all those who have accused us for stealing composition should know that me and haider together in nadia khans show composed a tune live on air.Thats what we are capable of.If we can sit in a show and make a song for host of
the show right away in seconds then you think we would go out and copy someone else tunes? Can i just laugh ? ..

As my last post was about the song SAZA KI JAZA of HISAAR band and i said that this song is in controversy.... Hisaar is saying that OMER NADEEM copied thier track. So here i am giving the statement of HISAAR on this issue....
“Our this song has recently been claimed by our old buddy Omar Nadeem as his own composition and he released an unplugged snip of it on internet. This song has been Composed & Written by me (Hadi) & Saad and we have performed this song in several gatherings of our friends where Omar Nadeem was also present. “SAZA KI JAZA” is sequel to our orignal song ‘Saza’ can be downloaded HERE which was recorded by Sam at PMR Studios over an year ago and was released exclusively on PMR. One having enough music/lyrics sense can even notice the link between lyrics of both songs Saza and Saza Ki Jaza. Omar released only 1 min and 21 sec clip with incomplete lyrics and due to his this act we were compelled to record full version over night in poor quality at my home to claim its rights. Support us to save our song! - soon we`ll be releasing proper unplugged version, better quality of this song.” - Hadi (Hisaar)

Hope that it is your mind that few days back, i made a post about the song Saza Ki Jaza by OMER NADEEM. And the very same song is out now with a new vocal and under the name of the band HISAAR. In fact, HISAAR band was first JANUD and later they changed the band name to HISAAR.... Well the story is that now HISAAR band is claiming that the song Saza Ki Jaza is of HISAAR and OMER NADEEM copied it, just like OMER NADEEM claimed that ROXEN copied his track DIL KA DIYA... Well here is the song for you from HISAAR...Listen this new version of SAZA KI JAZA and in my next post , i will post the statement of HISAAR on this issue....

Omer Nadeem is back again with a new and superb composition, Saza Ki Zaja.
It's a nice composition like all other previous songs of Omer Nadeem. I think when Omer will release his album then it will be the only one in which all songs will be popular..... This guy is just great in compositions.
